Over the weekend, Keith Richards was a surprise guest at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in New York City, joining Clapton for a pair of songs. Keith played guitar and sang lead on the blues number “Key To The Highway,” and then announced, “Now we’re gonna rock it up!” With that, they launched into Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Rock and Roller.” Which got us thinking about all the great Chuck Berry covers that the Rolling Stones have put their spin on over the years. Here’s a few we’d love to see on the setlist for their upcoming string of U.S. shows.
This week, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has been honoring Chuck Berry as part of its 17th Annual American Music Masters series. The celebration wraps up Saturday night (October 27) with a concert paying tribute to the man, featuring a diverse cast of artists including Rick Derringer, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, country music legend Merle Haggard, David Johansen of The New York Dolls (formerly known as Buster Poindexter), metal icon Lemmy, indie rocker M. Ward, Ronnie Hawkins (leader of The Hawks, who later became The Band), bluesman Joe Bonamassa and DMC from Run-DMC.
The album isn’t quite the same without hearing Dolenz’s stories behind the song choices. He shares a few in our sit-down session with him.
Chuck Berry has been honored by countless guitarists who came after him, but now he’ll be honored – once again – by the institution of rock’n'roll itself.
