Bob Dylan Spotted Painting Topless Women in Central Park

Bob Dylan ditched his microphone for an easel last Thursday (June 13) when he was spotted in Central Park, seemingly painting portraits of topless models lounging in the grass. The musician tagged along with artist pal Richard Prince for the outing, which has caused a bit of a stir.

While onlookers and art bloggers initially assumed Dylan was basing his work off the live models in front of him, it has been revealed that the inspiration behind his painting is actually a photo of Italian actress Sonia Aquino by fashion photographer Bruno Bisang. This comes over a year in the wake of his 2011 painting scandal, in which Dylan was confronted with the very same issue of basing his work off of existing photographs. Some even speculate as to whether Dylan even painted the latest work himself at all, or if Richard Prince might have lent an artistic hand. Critics of Dylan’s past shows addressed the probability of his work acting as social commentary rather than art, making the integrity of its originality irrelevant.a

Depeche Mode’s ‘Concert For The Masses’ Rose Bowl Show, 25 Years Later

Today marks a historic day in Depeche Mode’s career. Twenty five years ago, on June 18, 1988, the British synth-pop band played the 101^st show of their Music For The Masses Tour to more than 65,000 fans at the famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. But this show proved to be more special than any of the 100 before it. This show would be dubbed the “Concert for the Masses,” and go down as the band’s most indelible performance.

Thanks to Depeche Mode fan site DM TV Archives, an 18-minute short film was assembled from television news and personal footage boasting several never-before-seen and behind-the-scenes clips from the day of the Rose Bowl concert, which you can watch here.

“This will be a very big occasion for us,” said former member Alan Wilder in a pre-concert press conference (shown in the video). “Not only being the largest but also the most prestigious concert we’ve ever played as a headline act.”

Interviewed just prior to taking the stage, Martin Gore, the band’s chief songwriter admitted, “We’re quite nervous. It’s the biggest event… Biggest crowd we’ve ever played to.” But it is the 101st show [on the tour]. We’re quite rehearsed. We’re quite ready for it.”

According to keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, the band’s biggest audience to date had been 40,000. The Rose Bowl audience would dwarf that number by at least 25,000. The show coincided with the 10th anniversary of Los Angeles alternative station KROQ (a Radio.com station), which had been a longtime Depeche Mode supporter.

“Every other radio station in SoCal mocked us on the air saying, ‘Depeche Mode should be at the Palladium not at a stadium’ and in truth behind the scenes we were all nervous,” Richard Blade, a KROQ DJ at the time of the show, recounted to Radio.com. “I drove into the vast empty arena with Depeche Mode on an overcast February morning to announce the concert and the tickets on sale, and after the live broadcast had concluded I had breakfast with the band and Martin Gore confided in me that he was nervous and hoped they could at least sell out the floor seats – just 10,000 tickets.”

New Study Says ‘Sibling Bullying’ As Bad As School Bullying

Did you pick on your kid brother or sister when you were little? Maybe YOU were the sibling who was picked on?

A new study shows “sibling bullying” is just as damaging to a kid as bullying by a kid in school or by a neighbor.

Some important info from the study:

The problem is: lots of Moms and Dads see it as normal.
The journal of Pediatrics says it can actually lead to depression, anxiety and anger for the victims, whether they’re children or teenagers.

Moral of the story, parents, is don’t let it continue. If it’s not OK in school, it’s not OK at home.

Ron Wood On The Rolling Stones’ Future: ‘We’ve Just Got To Find The Gaps To Record’

With the Rolling Stones’ U.S. tour winding down (it comes to a close June 24 in Washington, D.C.), the question among fans is: Will this be the last time the band plays the states? The name of their tour – 50 & Counting – doesn’t really shout “farewell tour.”

Guitarist Ron Wood — still the “new guy” in the band, though he joined in 1975 — recently called Boston classic rock station WZLX (a Radio.com station) to chat with DJ Chuck Nowlin a bit about his love of the city, recalling visiting Boston on tour when he was the bass player in the Jeff Beck Group, and chatting with WZLX DJ Peter Wolf (of the J. Geils Band).

As for the present, Wood says that the band has been in great shape on this tour.

“We’re playing better than ever,” he said. “The shows are the best we’ve ever done.”

Turntable Tuesday: John Travolta and Olivia-Newton John Define Summer Time

CBS-FM has a fun feature called Turntable Tuesday. Once an hour, we play an “oh wow” record from vinyl. I feel like Dr. Johnny Fever when I “cue up” a record.

Summer begins this week. Also, the movie adaptation of “Grease” was new in theaters this week in 1978. So, it makes perfect sense to play “Summer Nights” by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John on “Turntable Tuesday”. It’s considered one of the greatest summer songs of all time by Billboard and many other sources.

Let that killer last note Travolta hits take you back to the best summer you’ve had (aka the first one you didn’t have to spend with your parents). You could even consider making out under the dock and staying out ’till 10 o’clock you rebel, you.

‘True Blood’ Music Recap: Mikky Ekko Subs In For Eric Burdon

Over the course of its five seasons, “True Blood” has consistently been one of the best shows on television not only for fans of vampires but for music fans as well. Each episode is named after a song title, and a number of artists have contributed new recordings to the show. Every Monday during season six, Radio.com will speak with “True Blood” Music Supervisor Gary Calamar, who has been nominated for GRAMMYs twice for his work on the show. Season one’s premiere episode was titled “Who Are You, Really?” That was a question that Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) was asking of her former paramour Bill Compton (played by her real-life husband, Stephen Moyer, who also directed the episode). At the end of last season, Compton appeared to die, only to be immediately resurrected with even greater powers. In the season premiere, when Sookie comes face to face with Bill, she is skeptical that it is actually the vampire she used to love. So “Who Are You, Really?” by Mikky Ekko seems to be a fitting song for all this.

But as Gary Calamar tells Radio.com, there was originally different music planned for the season premiere, but a change of the episode’s title necessitated a change of plans. “This was an interesting situation,” he said. “The first script for season six was originally titled ‘Don’t Let me Be Misunderstood,’ and we went ahead and recorded a beautiful, ‘True Blood-y’ new version of the song with Eric Burdon (who of course sang the original Animals version) with Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley, Postal Service). We were thrilled with the new version.”

Late Springsteen Saxophonist Clarence Clemons Gets His Own Day In NJ

“The Big Man” officially has his own day in New Jersey.

Bruce Springsteen‘s bandmate and original member of the E-Street Band, Clarence Clemons, has been given his own day as declared by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Clarence Clemons Day has been set for Jan. 11, Clemons’ birthday, wire services reported.

Clemons died of heart complications as a result of a stroke in 2011. He was 69.

Gov. Christie, an avid Springsteen fan, has been to over 130+ Springsteen shows, and ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff at the time of Clemon’s death.

The resolution to give the big-time saxophone player his own day was proposed by New Jersey Senator Jennifer Beck.

“The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E- Street Band,” Beck said, “and the E-Street Band would not have been the same without the sound of a saxophone played by Clarence Clemons.”
