Van Halen’s shows throughout May and June, including one in St. Paul on Saturday, will go on as planned. Van Halen has spent much of 2012 on the road, promoting A Different Kind Of Truth, their first album with David Lee Roth since 1984.

No official statement from Van Halen’s camp has been offered up regarding these postponements or when the new dates will be announced. In fact, the band announced that they were adding more to the tour just earlier this week, so the rescheduling comes as a surprise. In 2008, Van Halen was forced to put a tour on hold due to Eddie Van Halen’s undisclosed health problems.

In local markets, promoter AEG Live have not been listing reasons for the delay, promising “future dates to be announced,” reports Salt Lake City’s Daily Herald.

I had the opportunity to interview her several times. In fact on her last visit to CBS-FM was while she was promoting her book Ordinary Girl: The Journey. Listen to her stories about growing up, her influence for writing “She Works Hard For The Money” and more in this interview. The other voice you’ll hear was Karen Stewart, who did news on my morning show at the time of this interview around 2003.

On the subject matter of Ordinary Girl:

“I’m not the kind of person by nature to be a ‘bare all’ type of person. I bare personal things, but not other people’s personal things… The book is to be looked at differently. It’s not a gossip or tell-all book. It’s a book about life.”

On her time in Greenwich Village:

“It was wild. It was probably a lot like it is today; people are trying to relive that reality. There were like 90 Lenny Kravitz in the park playing a guitar. It was just a really cool time to be there. I relish that particular period.”

On writing her song “Bad Girls:”

” I had the idea and went to my husband … we went into the studio one evening and just said ‘you know what, I want to write this song …’ It was based on a story of a girl that worked at our office that had happened that day actually. Police were bothering her. She was walking down Sunset Blvd. and they were just trying to pick her up … but they were harassing her and kind of treating her as if she were a prostitute, and this girl in no way looks like a prostitute. So it kind of irritated me enough to stimulate my mind and I started thinking about the girls who really do walk on that street. That how the song really came about.”

On writing “She Works Hard For The Money:”

“I was at a GRAMMY party and I walk into the ladies room and there is a little lady sitting in the corner. She’s kind of sleeping and women are coming in and out, they’re spraying perfume, they’re talking … she’s quietly there, the TV is on, her head is nodding. When I kind of walked around her I saw that she was actually sleeping and I thought to myself, ‘she works hard for the money.’ Then I said it again, ‘she works hard for the money, she works hard for the money!’ Then it dawned on me, ‘this is a hit!’ So I ran in the room and I got a pen from my manager, ran into the bathroom and got some toilet paper, and I started writing ‘She Works Hard For The Money’ and the concept of seeing this woman sitting there … The next day I go in (the studio), I take that one line ‘she works hard for the money,’ stand at the microphone and go ‘just play the music’ and I wrote the song at the microphone.”

“Love To Love You Baby,” 1975

Her first hit as Donna Summer (rather than her given name, Donna Gaines) is easily the sexiest song of her career, thanks to breathy vocals, racy moans and a funky bass line. Summer’s audible moaning even led to the song’s banning on a handful of radio stations. Through the years, film has immortalized the No. 2 hit by using “Love To Love You Baby” to soundtrack on-screen “sexy time.” Listen to it here.

“I Feel Love,” 1977

By 1977, disco was at its peak, and Donna Summer was the songstress of choice during those long nights spent on the dance floor, strutting under the disco ball. But with her No. 6 hit “I Feel Love,” Summer sounded ahead of her time, channeling a future era when dance music would become more about fast electronic beats than a groovy bass line and a catchy chorus. “Last Dance,” 1978

The concept of “Last Dance” seems simple, but its structure is a real piece of work, filled with dramatic tempo changes and instrumentation (strings, horns, synths, oh my!). “MacArthur Park,” 1978

Many artists have covered the Jimmy Webb-penned “MacArthur Park,” but Donna Summer’s dramatic disco version remains the most well-known. Summer made the song her own, and for her efforts, she was rewarded with her first No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart. Listen to it here.

“Hot Stuff,” 1979

Even before the spacey synth on “Hot Stuff” picks up, it’s not hard to identify the song, thanks to its rock guitar riff and toe-tapping beat. Its unmistakeable sound, along with Summer’s lady-on-the-prowl lyrics, helped “Hot Stuff” launch up the charts, eventually reaching No. 1. Listen to it here.

“Bad Girls,” 1979

From the “toot-toot, beep-beep” to the whistle noises, few disco hits sound as distinct as “Bad Girls” – and continue to get dance club play. The song – Summer’s third of four No. 1 hits in a year’s time – was supposedly inspired by her assistant being mistaken for a prostitute by a cop. Listen to it here.

“No More Tears (Enough Is Enough),” 1979

Like many other disco divas, Summer has become an icon in the gay community, due to little more than her dance music and tales of empowerment. Perhaps her most empowering tale, “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” – a duet with Barbra Streisand – went on to become a full-fledged gay anthem. The five-minute song – half ballad, half dance track – was just as much of a smash in the mainstream as well, reaching No. 1 on the Hot 100. Listen to it here.

“She Works Hard for the Money,” 1983

While she proudly reigned as the Queen of Disco, Summer managed to transcend the genre when it fell out of vogue in the 1980s, incorporating elements of new wave, R&B and pop-rock into her sound. In 1983, Summer scored her biggest post-disco hit, “She Works Hard for the Money,” an upbeat song that not only felt modern for the era due to its empowering working girl narrative but also its epic guitar, saxophone AND synth solos. In receiving the honor, King joined other artists including John Fogerty, the Jacksons, the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Carlos Santana, and Dolly Parton who have been recipients of the award.

Peter Noone, who first burst onto the music scene in 1964 as lead singer for Herman’s Hermits, performed that band’s King penned first single, “I’m Into Something Good,” in a musical tribute to King. He was joined in the tribute by Colbie Caillat performing “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and up-and-comer Hailey Reinhart, who sang “Beautiful.”

Throughout her more than half century career in music, King has received a total of 31 BMI songwriting awards in varying genres including pop, R&B and country.

And though they can be annoying at times, traffic lights are supposed to bring some form of order to our travels. But there is a traffic light in China that has everyone confused.

Officials from China’s Chongqing City have installed a single pole that has over 20 sets of lights on it. The randomly changing lights, which aren’t aided by any signs to signify which to follow, have befuddled many motorists.

“When you look at one light it’s red but the one next to it is green,” says one driver. “No one knows where or when to go because they just seem to change randomly.”

Authorities have informed drivers to ignore the Christmas tree like traffic lights (You can see them HERE) because they are strictly for decoration.

During the Beach Boys’ live broadcast, fans will also have the opportunity to order their new album.

According to the QVC website, all orders will be shipped out on June 5 regardless of when the order is placed. However, if one does order tonight during the special, the album will be paired with a bonus CD including 11 tracks of the Beach Boys’ greatest hits.

Along with the album, there is also a new book being published about the Beach Boys on June 1, Fifty Sides of The Beach Boys: The Songs that Tell Their Story by Mark Dillon.

According to the description, it says this book tells the story behind 50 of the band’s greatest songs from the perspective of group members, collaborators, fellow musicians, and notable fans. There are chapters that feature certain songs, such as “Kokomo,” “Barbra Ann” and “Fun Fun Fun.” It is filled with new interviews with music legends such as Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Alan Jardine, Alice Cooper and Al Kooper, and commentary from a younger generation such as Matthew Sweet, Carnie Wilson, Daniel Lanois, Cameron Crowe, and Zooey Deschanel.

The photo has been in the hands of a private collector who has decided to put it up for auction at the London-based Bloomsbury auctions. Sarah Wheeler, a music specialist from Bloomsbury told The Sun about the picture, saying, “Macmillan had 10 minutes to do the shoot and he took six photographs of the Beatles walking backwards and forwards across the zebra crossing.

“He was standing up a ladder to take the pictures. In the one we have Paul McCartney is wearing sandals and in the image that was finally used he is barefoot.

“The photo has been called an icon of the 1960s. I think the reason it became so popular is its simplicity. It’s a very simple, stylized shot and is a shot people can relate to.

“The Beatles walked forwards and backwards three times and by pure chance a VW Beetle is in the background. That car is now in a museum.”

The image is also signed by Macmillian, who died in 2006. The 18×18 print is one of only 25 made from the original frame.
