This Week in History: Beatles, Banjos, Bee Gees, Biggie and… Tom Jones!

Hi guys, Joe Causi back at you again with another Week in Music History!

Get ready some really big highs and some really huge lows this week as we head back with Sir Paul finally settling down; One of the biggest movie theme songs of the ’70s; We lose one amazing pop star and one incredible Hip Hop artist; and finally, it’s time for Tom Jones to grow up!

The ’60s

It would be this week in 1969, Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman at the Marylebone Register Office. They then held a reception lunch at The Ritz Hotel, and then Paul went to Abbey Road studios in the evening to work.

Meanwhile, on the same day, George Harrison and his wife Patti were arrested and charged with possession of 120 joints of marijuana!

Talk about having a great HONEYMOON!?!

“Dueling Banjos” by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell

The ’70s

It’s off to the 70’s we go when it was this week in 1973, the theme song from Deliverance called ‘Dueling Banjos’ by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel would become one of the few ’70s instrumentals to be awarded a Gold record.

The record would also top the Cash Box Magazine Best Sellers list and reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

By the way, this is Broadway Bill Lee’s All-time favorite song!

 


andy gibb This Week in History: Beatles, Banjos, Bee Gees, Biggie and... Tom Jones!

The ’80s

It happened this week in 1988, when the younger brother of The Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, would pass away at the age of 30.

His death from myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) followed a long battle with cocaine addiction, which had weakened his heart.

The ’90s

And it’s back to the 90’s, when Hip Hop legend Notorious B.I.G. would be gunned down and killed this week in 1997 as he left a party at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

Born Christopher Wallace, the larger than life rapper was pronounced dead on arrival at Cedars Sinai Hospital. He was only 24-years-old.

Truly the very BEST Hip Hop artist of all time!

The 2000’s

Finally, it would be in 2004, singer Tom Jones would be banned from wearing tight leather pants by his own son and manager Mark Jones. His son said it was time to ‘dress his age’ as he was in danger of becoming a laughing stock at 63.

 

Oh! What does his son know anyway?! Just put a sock in it, will ya?!
