Deb Gordon’s guest was Noreen Springstead, Executive Director of WhyHunger, a leading global hunger organization with the mission to fight against hunger through various programs.
“There are 42 million Americans who go hungry,” said Springstead. “We work towards grass root solutions…programs that are really working with people to empower them and address the underlying issues around hunger.”
WhyHunger continues to meet the needs of the growing population of hungry people, providing a variety of resources including a hunger hotline to connect hungry people to nutritious feeding sources and sites.
“There are so many of our partners we work with…and many, many local organizations in NYC – and the primary increase in demand is coming from working families…they struggle to pay the rent, they struggle to pay all of their bills and still put food on the table,” Springstead said.
“The hotline number… is 1 800 5-HUNGRY, 1 800 548-6479…We also have a texting service, where you can text your zip code to the 1 800 548-6479, and in the palm of your hand, you will get a listing of all of those local services close to your home.”
Every year, WhyHunger hosts Hungerthon to raise funds in support of their efforts. This year’s event kicked off on November 1st and goes through the Thanksgiving holiday season, offering radio listeners the chance to win great prizes, while donating for a great cause.
“It’s been a Thanksgiving radio tradition since 1975,” said Springstead.
WhyHunger’s long standing collaborative history with the radio community allows them to offer great donation incentives and auction items, such as coveted autographed guitars, tickets to see live acts, and a chance to get up close and personal with some of radio’s biggest stars!
In addition, $1 for each ticket sold to the WCBS FM Holiday concert featuring Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor, will go to Why Hunger.
“It’s such a great partnership with CBS Radio…and all the other radio partners, to use Thanksgiving as this kind of pivotal moment, to say there’s hunger in America, you can do something about it,” said Springstead.
All proceeds from Hungerthon 2016 will go to help WhyHunger help hungry New Yorkers.
“This is our biggest fundraising drive, and we count on the CBS listeners…to support Why Hunger’s work to get to the root causes of hunger and poverty,” said Springstead.
