This Week In History: Bowie Boo’d, Marvin Gaye Sr Sentenced, Billy Idol’s Dead Fish, Britney Knocks a Few Back, & Elvis ‘Leaves the Building’

Hi guys! Joe Causi back with another week in music history. This week, let’s all settle around the fire as we look back on David Bowie getting BOO’D on Halloween; the greatest phrase in all of Rock & Roll is born; we lose Motown’s Marvin Gaye; Billy Idol gets a little fishy; and Britney Spears knocks a few back!

The ’60s

It happened this week in 1969, when David Bowie appeared at a Halloween night show in Gravesend, England. The gig lasted about 15 minutes. After Bowie sang ‘Space Oddity’ to everyones delight, he then dragged a stool on stage and sat there reading poems before he was finally booed off stage.

Good times…

The ’70s

It would be this very week in 1971 when the ‘King of Rock and Roll’, Elvis Presley, kicked off a 15-date North American tour in Minneapolis, MN. It would be that very night when announcer Al Dvorin uttered the well known phrase: “Elvis has left the building” for the first time at the end of the show.

He was asked to make the announcement in an effort to quiet fans who continued to call for an encore.

Thank you, thank you very much!

The ’80s

Off we go this week to 1984, when the Reverend Marvin Gaye Sr. was sentenced to a suspended six-year sentence and probation for the manslaughter of his son, Marvin Gaye.

He later died at a nursing home in 1998.

The ’90s

It happened this week in 1990, during a gig in Seattle, Washington, when cyber-punk Billy Idol dumped 600 dead fish in Faith No More‘s dressing room. They responded by walking on stage naked during Idol’s set.

Perhaps that’s where the band got the idea for the end of their video for “Epic.”

The 2000’s

And it would be this week in 2000, when Britney Spears paid $6,000 to hire a private bar in Leipzig, Germany during a night off on her ‘Oops!… I did It Again Tour.’

Britney, who was only 18 at the time, was reported to be knocking back vodka laced White Russians and Pina Coladas!

Here she is stumbling around…

And so it began…
