NYC Venues Cancel Performances by Drummer who Defended Brock Turner

By Staff

Multiple New York venues have canceled shows by Ohio band The Good English, after it was revealed that drummer Leslie Rasmussen wrote a letter in defense of Brock Turner, the Stanford student recently convicted of rape.

Rasmussen attended the same high school as Turner, and wrote the letter to Aaron Persky, the Judge in the case.

Gothamist reports that Industry City Distillery, Bar Matchless, The Rock Shop, Gold Sounds and the Northside Music Festival have all canceled scheduled appearances by the group after fans discovered Rasmussen’s involvement with the case.

“Yesterday, Good English was removed from the roster. The support of rape culture is not tolerated,” Industry City Distillery wrote on their official Facebook page.

In part Rasmussen’s letter to the judge reads:

I don’t think it’s fair to base the fate of the next ten + years of his life on the decision of a girl who doesn’t remember anything but the amount she drank to press charges against him. I am not blaming her directly for this, because that isn’t right. But where do we draw the line and stop worrying about being politically correct every second of the day and see that rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists.

Turner’s trial has made national headlines in part due to his lenient sentence of six months, after facing a maximum 14 years of incarceration, and his father’s controversial comments in defense of his son.
