Friends of the late civil rights activist and mother of Tupac Shakur, Afeni Shakur, have taken to social media to express grief about her death and admiration of her accomplishments. Many cited her formative influence on Tupac as a man and artist, as well as her own contributions as an activist. Questlove posted a throwback photo simply captioned “queen” while others remembered her life and legacy in greater depth.
Jada Pinkett-Smith paid tribute on Facebook, writing, “Afeni was a giant in her own right. Today she is reunited with her son and Sekyiwa has two majestic angels to look after her. One for each shoulder. Rest in peace Afeni, and give Pac a hug and a kiss from me.”
On Instagram, Tyrese wrote: “One of the most sincere mothers I’ve ever known…….. Your son was on your mind and prayers everyday thank you for giving birth to Hip Hop thank you everything you stood for.”
Pepa of Salt N Pepa, the Game, and iLoveMakonnen also shared tributes:
