This Week In History: Harrison, Springsteen, Jackson, Lennon, and Hill

“Brooklyn’s Own” Joe Causi has been around a few blocks, quite a few times — so when he’s got some music history for you, you’d better take heed.

We’re back at you with another week in music history as we look back on how George Harrison helped the Rolling Stones; ‘The Boss’ passed an audition; and Lauryn Hill got the slammer — PLUS more!

The ’60s

It was this week in 1963, on a recommendation by Beatle George Harrison that Dick Rowe, head of A&R at Decca records, (and the man who turned down The Beatles) went to see the Rolling Stones play at The Crawdaddy Club in London.

The ’70s

Let’s head back to this week in 1972, when Bruce Springsteen auditioned for Columbia Records right here in New York City.

Springsteen played a short set for him in his office and the suits were so impressed that they arranged a real audition that night at the Gaslight Club here in town for other execs.

Guess what? Bruce passed the audition, and the Saga continues!

The ’80s

It was this week in 1989, a security guard alerted Beverly Hills police after a man wearing a wig, fake moustache and false teeth walked into Zales Jewelers store.

Three squad cars arrived and police detained the man, who turned out to be the “King of POP” Michael Jackson in disguise!

The ’90s

Can you imagine?!?

It was this week in 1992 when a leather jacket that was sweated in, smoked in and and who-knows-what in that was worn by John Lennon during the early 1960s was sold at Christie’s auction in London for a cool forty-three thousand bucks!

The 2000’s

Finally, it was this week back in 2013 when Ms Lauryn Hill was sentenced in the state of New Jersey to three months in the slammer for tax evasion.

At the time, the 37 year-old GRAMMY-winning singer had failed to pay taxes on about two million in income.
