Don Henley hit Stephen Colbert’s Late Show stage for a performance of “Too Much Pride” and a message for GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump.
Early on in his performance, Henley inserted the Donald’s name into the song’s lyrics, seamlessly.
“You don’t have to be right, Donald, all the time,” he sang. “You can’t go on with all these axes to grind/ So why don’t you lighten up and let it ride/ Too much pride”
But he didn’t stop there. In case one might be wondering if the Donald to whom he was referring was himself, he added clarification.
“Now listen Mr. Trump, empires rise and empires fall/ you stick around here long enough you’ll see it all,” he sang. “Now it looks like it’s gone nationwide/ too much pride.”
“Too Much Pride” is a cut from Cass County, Henley’s fifth solo album. His performance comes just ahead of the tour he’s launching in October that begins in Phoenix (Oct. 3).
