She’s So Unusual — Cyndi Lauper‘s debut, and breakthrough, album released late in 1983 — is celebrating its 30th anniversary. From its initial success to the continued adoration it’s received, Lauper knows better than anyone the fans are the ones she is most thankful for.
For She’s So Unusual: A 30th Anniversary Celebration, Lauper wanted to give fans more; that meant digging up tapes and demos, plus adding a few extra treats people have been asking for for some time.
“For the people that really loved that album… we dug up demos where they could hear how things developed,” says Lauper, winner of two Grammys, one Emmy, and one Tony Award.
For years, Cyndi was also asked to release a doll. As a compromise, fans will be able to own a cut out, thanks to the help from art director Sheri Lee, who has worked with Lauper for years.
Lauper was also on tour for the She’s So Unusual: 30th Anniversary Tour, which finished up at the start of January. Now she’s back, performing with her good friend, Cher, on the Dressed to Kill Tour.
“It’s nice to show up and be with your friend. She’s really awesome,” says Lauper. “I even stand there and go, ‘Oh! Look at this!'”
Lauper and Cher will be performing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on May 9 and at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey on May 10.
