WFAN’s Joe Benigno Goes From Loyal Listener To Radio Star

Joe Benigno, a staple of WFAN’s programming since 1995, took a walk upstairs to CBS-FM today to talk sports and his rise to radio success with Scott Shannon in the Morning.

“I was a caller for a long time,” says Benigno, who went by Joe from Saddle River. “They had what they called a ‘Fan Appreciation Day’ — this is like 20 years ago, like 1995 — they brought a number of callers in to do an hour show. I happen to be fortunate enough to be one of the guys.”

“After all was said and done… Mike Francesa specifically, critiquing the various callers on his show the next day and basically said the only one who had a shot to make it in radio was me,” added Benigno.

After some time at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting and a stint at a station in Elizabeth, New Jersey called WJDM, Benigno received a phone call from WFAN’s Operations Manager, Mark Chernoff. Benigno started out working the overnight shift in 1995 and moved to middays in 2004.

Listen to Scott Shannoon’s full interview with Joe Benigno below as they talk about the Mets, Yankees, and tune in to Joe and Evan on WFAN from 10AM-1PM every Monday through Friday, including when they head down to Dallas for the Final Four.
