Calling in this morning on the CBS-FM Star Phone is late night veteran Arsenio Hall. Hall became a comedic star with roles in hit films like Coming To America and Harlem Nights. He landed his own late night gig, The Arsenio Hall Show, which ran for five seasons from 1989 to 1994. The show was revived in September 2013 and was just renewed for a second season.
Arsenio received the news of his show’s renewal from one of the biggest names in late night history, Jay Leno. Leno, making his first TV appearance since departing from the Tonight Show, was a guest on the show last week, but snuck his way on stage during Hall’s opening monologue.
Hall discussed the show’s renewal for a second season and the success it’s achieved early on.
“These days, just getting numbers, isn’t the name of the game. It’s this bizarre demographers game,” says Arsenio of his success the second time around. “You got to have to have the right numbers, the right age.”
“He [Prince] did it before for an entire hour,” recalls Hall of Prince’s performance on September 4, 1991. “He’s our Sammy Davis, Jr. He’s been around forever. He does everything.”
“Wait ’til you see how he takes over the show,” added Hall.
The Arsenio Hall Show airs tonight at 11pm on WPIX Channel 11. Listen to Scott Shannon and Arsenio Hall talk about his new show, Prince, and Mr. G’s problem with the late night host below.
