Former Heart drummer Michael Derosier has not had a high profile in the years since he left the band, but that’s changing – he and former bandmate (bassist) Steve Fossen were just inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with their former bandmates, and they’ve just started Heart By Heart, giving them a vehicle to perform Heart’s biggest hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
But on April 18, the original members performed together, for just one song at their induction. Derosier recently spoke to Scott Vanderpool from Seattle’s KZOK about that night. He noted that it had been over three decades since the original members played together: “It was very surreal. The first rehearsal was in a studio and I hadn’t seen Ann and Nancy for years.” The original lineup performed “Crazy On You” and that was it: Ann and Nancy then performed “Dog And Butterfly,” and then were joined by the current members of the band (along with Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell) for “Barracuda.”
“We went back and forth with Ann and Nancy’s manager about this,” he said. “I had a little conversation with Ann about it. Rehearsal was so weird, we didn’t talk much. When Steve and I left in the ‘80s, it wasn’t the friendliest of partings, and we haven’t talked much in all these years. And you would think that after all this time the dust would settle and you go, let’s just have some fun and do it right. So they had their new guys who have been playing with them for quite a while. You can’t get around chemistry and if it works, it works and there’s no denying it… you know if you start changing the ingredients in an apple pie, it ain’t gonna be an apple pie anymore.”
