The musical duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates (they don’t like being called “Hall & Oates”) skyrocketed into popularity and cassette decks in the late ’70s and mid ’80s with their “rock and soul” sound. Their music has even had a resurgence in recent years in television and movies, appearing in TV shows like Glee, HBO’s now defunct How To Make It In America and being featured prominently in films like 500 Hundred Days Of Summer and She’s Out Of My League which features a Hall & Oates cover band named “Adult Education.”

With so much attention and accolades, you would think you know everything there is to know about the two and their music. But you’d probably be wrong.

“Rich Girl” was the first of six number one hits for Hall & Oates, appearing on their 1976 album Bigger Than Both of Us. You’ve heard it countless times, over and over. But do you really know “Rich Girl”?

That’s right. “Rich Girl” isn’t about a spoiled girl, but rather a spoiled boy. A boy named Victor Walker, who previously dated Hall’s then girlfriend Sara Allen, rich with his father’s fast food money (possibly pancakes).

There is an emergency hotline dubbed “Callin’ Oates” where the caller is given four options to listen to a H&O classic.

Hall & Oates? Murder? Something doesn’t add up.

But notorious Son of Sam killer, David Berkowitz, claimed in an interview read by Daryl Hall that “Rich Girl” fed his hunger for killing. So much for that damn dog, huh?

But even if it did inspire Berkowitz to proceed with his shootings, it couldn’t have started it all. Bigger Than Both of Us was released in August of 1976, roughly a month after his first attacks on July 29, 1976.

“Rich Girl” Is Punk

Well, the original recording isn’t. One of the many artists to cover “Rich Girl” is the punk rock supergroup and cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. The band releases cover albums, typically around some kind of theme. “Rich Girl” appeared on 2008′s Have Another Ball.

Better than inspiring murder, right?

George Watsky is a rapper and slam poet from from San Francisco, California. Like many hip hop artists, Watsky sampled the H&O classic on his own song “Rich Girl” from his mixtape Nothing Like The First Time. The theme of the song is the same as the Hall & Oates original.
