The 1980s were a great time for pop music. One of those faces and voices burned into our memory from that time is Pat Benatar. During a decade of excess and indulgence, Benatar made us swoon with hits like “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”, “Love Is a Battlefield” and “Invincible.” Another favorite among the masses is “We Belong.” Benatar’s 1984 single joined the aforementioned hits as one of her most memorable. But don’t act like you know “We Belong” like you think you do. There is more to it than a song about love. Here are 5 Things You Didn’t Know About “We Belong”…
“We Belong” Was Covered By The Songwriter
We know that sounds weird at first, but remember Benatar didn’t write many of her popular hit singles (“Love Is a Battlefield” was written by by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman while “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” was written by Eddie Schwartz). “We Belong” was written by the songwriting duo of of David Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro in 1984, recording their own version for their 1990 album Walking On a Wire. Listen to a clip of Lowe and Navarro’s version HERE.
“We Belong” Inspires More Than Romantic Love
On the surface Benatar’s “We belong” is about love between two people, but it really transcends that. The love can be directed towards your job, a hobby and even sports. Take this scene from the groundbreaking film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby starring comedic great Will Ferrell as the title character. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj2o7a-DpAo A fiery crash won’t a stop this race car driver from reclaiming his past glory, leading to a footrace, climatic finish and man-on-man kiss. The point here is that “We Belong” not only inspired Ricky Bobby to return to greatness, but it inspired him to become a better person.
Canada Loves “We Belong”
Benatar has 14 Top 40 hits in the US, including “We Belong,” but only two in the Great White North. Along with “Love Is a Battlefield,” they are the only two songs from Benatar to be certified Gold in Canada by selling 5000+ units.
“We Belong” Can Be Very Classy
There is absolutely nothing wrong with “We Belong.” No one will complain if it comes on in the doctor’s office and your parents won’t tell you to turn the volume down from 11. But when Vitamin String Quartet perform the Benatar hit it makes you feel like you could be sitting in a restaurant that most people can only afford on anniversaries. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5s6YcPcxkM
“We Belong” Is On Broadway
If you frequent Broadway, you might have noticed “We Belong” as one of the final numbers in the award-winning musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The song is one of many hits from the ’80s that is featured during the show. Pat Benatar will be performing in Atlantic City at the House of Blues on April 27th with Neil Giraldo.
