Despite his soaring popularity with permit licensed teens and the obsessive paparazzi coverage, Justin Bieber still has not had a number one single in the US. Despite owning several chart topping singles, Barry Manilow feels he and Bieber are one of a kind.
“I was the Justin Bieber of the ’70s,” Manilow said during opening night of his extensive Broadway residency. “Really. Just ask your mother.”
Manilow finally took the stage after cancelling several performances last week due to bouts with the flu and bronchitis, which he recalled humorously to the crowd.
“I have hacked up enough phlegm to float Fire Island,” laughed the Brooklyn born singer as boxes of tissues lined the stage in case of emergency.

Over nearly two hours, Manilow’s performance takes a stroll through his life with both commentary and songs, which include hits like “Mandy,” “I Write Songs” and “Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again.” The show runs through March 2nd with the cancelled performances rescheduled to accommodate fans.
