The Grateful Dead are kicking-off their “30 Days of Dead” by launching their free Grateful Dead Almanac App. Now available as a free download on the iTunes App Store, the app features audio, video, and other embellishments, in addition to essays and updates from experts on the legendary jam-band.
The Grateful Dead Almanac has undergone several advancements in the past few years. Beginning as a printed direct mail piece, the Almanac has since evolved into an online publication, and now an app. Every day during the “30 Days of Dead”, the group will give fans a previously unreleased, high quality soundboard recording of a live-track for free on dead.net for one day only. Each of these recordings was hand-picked by Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux.
Lemieux has been the Grateful Dead’s audiovisual archivist since 1999, and the group’s Legacy Manager for the past two years. For 13 years, David has produced numerous CDs and DVDs, including the 73-CD Europe ’72 box set, and the 18-CD Spring 1990 box set. David also produces the quarterly Dave’s Picks 3-CD sets – the successor to the legendary Dick’s Picks series. All four editions of the 2012 series are completely sold-out, but subscriptions for the 2013 Dave’s Picks series are available now at dead.net. Besides high-quality live recordings, the sets also feature rare photos and in-depth liner notes. All four CD releases in the Dave’s Picks series will be limited to 13,000 copies and come with an collectible bonus CD exclusive to subscribers. The 2013 line will kick-off in February and currently has an early-bird pricing of $99.98.
On November 9th at 7pm, Lemieux will appeal at a presentation at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in conjunction with their featured Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip exhibit. The archivist will be interviewed in the Foster Theater, where he will also share audio and video clips from the Grateful Dead archives and take questions from the audience. The event is free with a reservation, but seating is limited. Rock Hall members can register now for tickets via the Rock Hall website or box office. The general public will be able to RSVP beginning tomorrow (Friday) at 10am. The event will also be streamed lived on rockhall.com.
