In September, E Street Band guitarist Little Steven Van Zandt started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the upcoming Rascals reunion shows at New York’s Capitol Theatre in December. The goal was to raise $100,000. The campaign ends today, and the goal has been met… and then some; as of press time, over $123,000 has been raised.
The show is more than just a reunion concert, it’s a multimedia production that tells the band’s story, and features a performance by the original members (who haven’t played together in public in four decades). As Van Zandt told CBS Local last week, “This would be like if Jersey Boys actually had (the original members of) The Four Seasons in the show. So it makes it a more entertaining evening by not only having the music, but by telling the story, because they have a great story.”

Rascals frontman Felix Cavaliere told New York’s WCBS-FM, “This is Steve’s brainchild, he’s making it happen. He’s making us do 30 songs! Some of which I haven’t done in many, many years. It’s been interesting, but it should be fun. Steve’s concept for this is kind of unique. I’ve never seen or heard of a show like this. As a matter of fact, his words to me were ‘Boy, when you see this, you’re gonna wish you could see this!’”

The first three shows (December 13, 14 and 15) have already sold out, though there are still tickets available for the following three shows (December 20 , 21 and 22). As of now, there are no plans for additional dates. But Little Steven says that if the show works, it may have a life beyond the six nights, and the multimedia show/reunion concert might be applied to other acts: “Maybe we’re heading towards Broadway in the end. This is a new idea, and if it works, it could open up a whole lot of interesting new shows because there are a lot of great ‘60s bands still around.”
