This weekend, Pegi Young and her backing band The Survivors will open up this year’s annual Farm Aid concert in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Pegi is well-known to Neil Young‘s fans not only as his wife, but as a regular member of his backing band and a co-founder of The Bridge School, which Young headlines a benefit concert for every year.
She’s currently promoting her third album, Bracing For Impact. The album features mostly songs penned by Ms. Young (one song, “Doghouse,” was written by her husband). Another, “I Don’t Want To Talk About It,” is a cover of a classic written by one of his late bandmates, legendary Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten. She tells CBS Local she knew she was walking on hallowed ground when she decided to cover the song. Watch below.
The original “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” was released on Crazy Horse’s Neil Young-less debut album, which came out in 1971 (after the band had recorded Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and parts of After The Gold Rush with Young). It was covered twice by Rod Stewart (in 1975 and 1989) and has also been re-intepreted by pop group Everything But The Girl, folk duo The Indigo Girls, and Crazy Horse alum-turned E Street Band member Nils Lofgren.
