What do you get when you lock The Beatles up in a Japanese hotel for two nights with a blank canvas and some paint?
The Fab Four’s one-of-a-kind collaborative abstract piece of art, titled “Images of a Woman,” will be up for grabs at Weiss Auctions in Oceanside, NY on September 14 after being stashed away under its owner’s bed for 20 years, the New York Times reports.
The band was set to perform at Budokan Hall, a prominent wrestling venue, in 1966 while on tour in Japan. After receiving death threats from sumo wrestling fans who were rather displeased with the idea of an English rock band setting up camp in what they considered holy grounds, the guys were placed under strict surveillance.
Left with nothing but their creative souls and some art supplies, the guys each took a corner of 30-inch by 40-inch sheet of paper and got to work, lit by a lamp that sat in the center of the canvas. The circular shape of the lamp base remains blank except for the band members’ signatures. View the painting here – and try to guess who painted which corner.
The artwork was donated to the chairman of the Beatles’ Japanese fan club. Since its creation 46 years ago, the piece was traded a few times before it was bought by its current owner, art collector Takao Nishino, who paid approximately $1.5 million for the memorabilia. The painting is now figured to sell at around $80,000 to $120,000.
