CBS-FM’s Top 500 Labor Day Weekend Countdown went off without a hitch, mostly in part to your submissions and votes of this year’s Top 20 songs. The music played on CBS-FM is timeless, but some artists and their music resonates with future generations better than others.

This point can be illustrated perfectly when we compare 2012′s Top 20 and the Top 500 pamphlet from 1983 (yes, before the internet we used to print them on pamphlets) we dug up from our archives. Many great songs stay in the listener voted Top 500 each year, but when you look carefully at the Top 20 lists from 1983 and 2012, you’ll see just one song stood the test of time.

“Hey Jude” by The Beatles is the only song to make an appearance in CBS-FM’s Top 20 almost thirty years apart. When the track was released in 1968, it topped the charts at #1 in seven different countries. Proving that the classic Beatles track has transcended generations, it also entered the charts in the UK during three other decades; in 1976, 1988 and again in 2010.

Paul McCartney revived “Hey Jude” once more this Summer when he performed the song during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics … to a standing room crowd at the Olympic Stadium, of course.

Will “Hey Jude” make it into the Top 20 thirty years from now? It certainly will, if history is any indicator.
