Let’s take a look at this week’s albums, reissues and other musical goodies from classic artists making musical waves yet again.
Spotlight Release of the Week:For their 13th studio album, Last of a Dyin’ Breed, Lynyrd Skynyrd played up the “rock” in Southern rock, a sound they helped to define in the 1970s. While their last album, 2009′s God & Guns was a bit more country-tinged, the new one packs some surprisingly metal riffs. But the record’s point of view remains distinctly Southern, with lyrics about Mississippi women and “homegrown,” blue collar living. The album dropped this week through the band’s own Loud & Proud Records and Roadrunner, and the band wraps its summer tour on September 1st.
This week, KISS re-released its most beloved album, 1976′s Destroyer, under the title Destroyer: Resurrected. In addition to being newly remixed/remastered by original producer Bob Ezrin, new features on the reissue include a new versions of their big hit “Beth” and “Sweet Pain.”
The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset compilation makes its way to the states after an earlier release in the UK, where it debuted this week at No. 14 on the album chart. The two-disc compilation is a definitive look at the band’s career, though it curiously leaves off “A Well Respected Man,” one of the band’s most enduring hits.
Finally, in honor of what would have been Joe Strummer’s 60th birthday on August 21st, Hellcat Records released a comprehensive look at Strummer’s later-life band, Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros. The collection, released exclusively digitally, encompasses the band’s three recoded albums, as well as rarities and live tracks from the Clash frontman’s late ’90s-early ’00s project.
