If you’re looking for some good summer reading, you can do far worse than Every Night’s A Saturday Night, the autobiography of legendary sax player Bobby Keys. The book details his decades working with the Rolling Stones, as well as sessions with John Lennon, George Harrison, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton, among many others.
Keys also wrote about a point in the ’60s where he lived in L.A. with a bunch of musicians who relocated from the Midwest to the West Coast, including Leon Russell, and the late Levon Helm, who passed away back in April after a battle with cancer. It turns out Helm, the singer and drummer of The Band, turned him on to blues harmonica players, which proved to be an important influence on his sax playing. Watch below, as Keys discusses Helm’s personal significance.
Keys says that, like Stones fans around the world, he’s looking forward to hearing news about a new Rolling Stones tour. For now, he does occasional shows with his backing band, The Suffering Bastards, which features Dan Baird (formerly of The Georgia Satellites) and Steve Gorman (formerly of The Black Crowes). Every Night’s A Saturday Night is out now.
