Included on the collection is Chickenfoot’s “Highway Star,” a song very familiar to that band’s guitarist Joe Satriani. In 1993, he temporarily replaced founding guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in Purple, but declined an invite to join the band on a full time basis (the gig was later offered to Steve Morse of The Dixie Dregs, who remains in DP to this day). Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith (who is also in The Red Hot Chili Peppers) plays on a second version of that song on the tribute: that version also features guitar god Steve Vai and former Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes.
Hughes and Smith also team up for “Maybe I’m A Leo.” Hughes likely performed both of those songs live during his era in the band (which lasted from 1973-1976), but wasn’t a member of the band when Machine Head was released.
A number of heavy metal legends weigh in on the collection as well: Iron Maiden takes on “Space Truckin’,” former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde and his Black Label Society cover “Pictures Of Home” and Metallica recorded the Machine Head B-side “When A Blind Man Cries.”
Of course, the band’s most famous song, “Smoke On The Water,” is represented on the album. Twice, in fact: the CD leads off with Carlos Santana’s take on the song, featuring Jacoby Shaddix (of metal band Papa Roach) on vocals. That version was originally released on Santana’s 2010 album Guitar Heaven. The second version on the tribute was recorded by classic rock enthusiasts The Flaming Lips (who have been known to cover Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety in concert).
The collection is rounded out by “Never Before” by Kings Of Chaos, and “Lazy” by Australian rocker Jimmy Barnes with American blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa.
Classic Rock Presents: Re-Machined – A Tribute To Deep Purple’s Machine Head will be out in the UK on September 4. The special issue will features one of Jon Lord’s final interviews.
