Fleetwood Mac is a band often name-checked by other acts, and now those influenced by the ’70s rockers will put their money where their mouth is. A tribute album to Fleetwood Mac, titled Just Tell Me That You Want Me after the lyric from the band’s “Tusk,” will be released August 14 on Hear Music/Concord.
The 17-song collection features mostly indie rockers putting their spin on Fleetwood Mac classics like “Gypsy,” “Landslide,” “Tusk,” “Dreams” and more. However, “Go Your Own Way” and “The Chain,” two of the band’s biggest hits off the cultural juggernaut that is Rumours, are missing from Just Tell Me That You Want Me.
Artists featured on the album include ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Marianne Faithfull, Best Coast (whose members continually cited the Mac when promoting new album The Only Place), The New Pornographers, Lykke Li, Karen Elson, The Kills, MGMT, and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo featuring Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis. Full tracklist is below.
The man behind the compilation is Randall Poster, who also put together last year’s widely acclaimed Buddy Holly tribute album, Rave On, and has worked as a music supervisor on Wes Anderson films.
“The story of Fleetwood Mac has always intrigued me.” Poster said in a release, “And we’ve tried to tell that story through the arc of music we’ve recorded. Working with some of our favorite artists and performers, the magical musical legacy of Fleetwood Mac shows itself to be alive and well.”
