Last night, HBO’s vampire series True Blood continued its long tradition of using song titles and lyrics in the titles of episodes. “Authority Always Wins” was named after a line in John Mellencamp‘s classic “Authority Song.” (Bill and Eric, two of the show’s main characters, were interrogated by the “Vampire Authority” in the episode, which introduced actor Christopher Meloni’s character, Roman Zimojic.)
The song ran during the credits, but as is often the case with True Blood, it was a new recording of a well known hit. Last week’s credit roll featured a new version of “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by arena headliners My Morning Jacket, and last night’s “Authority Song” was covered by a lesser-known artist, Brooklyn rockabilly singer Bosco Delrey.
True Blood Music Supervisor Gary Calamar told CBS Local, “I had heard Bosco’s (2011) album Everybody Wah and was very impressed. When the producers of True Blood and I were discussing options for “The Authority Song” Bosco immediately came to mind as someone who could put a nice new spin on it.”
Mellencamp’s original version is from his 1983 album Uh-Huh. The song, which Mellencamp said he wrote as his own take on “I Fought The Law,” was a #15 pop hit.
Next week’s episode is called “Whatever I Am, You Made Me,” but the True Blood Team remain tight-lipped over the music that they’ll use.
