Having once rocked the Super Bowl halftime show is not enough for The Who. As rumored over the last several months, the classic rockers will play the Olympics closing ceremony in London on August 12, reports NME.
Olympic organizers are attempting to appeal to all generations with a varied bill of British music stars for the closing ceremony: George Michael, reunited boy band Take That and soulful newcomer Emeli Sandé will also perform. The performance is being touted as George Michael’s big live comeback, following his nearly fatal bout of pneumonia in late 2011.
The lengthy show will take place at London’s Olympic Park and be broadcast live to billions worldwide.
Another British rock icon – Sir Paul McCartney – confirmed to BBC last week that he will play the London Olympics, closing out the games’ opening ceremony on July 27.
In April, the Who’s Olympic booking made headlines for a less-than-celebratory reason. Apparently organizers emailed longtime Who manager Bill Curbishley requesting that drummer Keith Moon, who died in 1978 of accidental overdose at the age of 32, play an Olympic event. “I emailed back saying Keith now resides in Golders Green crematorium, having lived up to the Who’s anthemic line ‘I hope I die before I get old,’” Curbishley told the UK’s Sunday Times (via Rolling Stone). “If they have a round table, some glasses and candles, we might contact him.”
