“The Night the Light Went Out in Georgia” was No. 1 for the first two weeks of April 1973, yet it’s not in the month’s Top 20 here. Strange.

And I forgot to add that “Sing” by the Carpenters peaked at No. 3 for two weeks that same month, but it’s also missing. I fear these records are considered too “uncool” to be played, but isn’t ignoring them rewriting history? I’ve noticed this on other countdowns: Other presumably uncool records that Bartley ignores when he does certain months include “The Candy Man,” “Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet,” “You Light Up My Life” (No. 1 for 10 weeks!), “One Bad Apple” and “Jean.” Maybe their appeal in 2012 is debatable, but again, it seems like it’s rewriting history to simply pretend that these huge hits in their day didn’t exist doesn’t give us the true picture of the featured months. Despite having said all of this, I love the show. I like that Bartley tells us the news, movies, sports, TV and other happenings of the months, and by and large, the selection of songs is wonderful. It’s just this willful ignoring of big hits that bothers me.
