The 2011 MTV VMAs was a night filled with commercially produced pop, with little rock ‘n’ roll to be found. Luckily for us, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Queen[/lastfm] guitarist [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Brian May[/lastfm] filled that void as he began the night with a performance on stage with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm].
Excuse me… Jo Calderone.

UltmateClassicRock.com reports that Lady Gaga ditched the meat suit and egg transport at the 2011 MTV VMAs for a more classic look this time around… a ’50s style greaser. Her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, was “a cussing, smoking, drinking fight-starter” who brought the only bit a rock attitude to the cookie-cutter events for the evening. That was until May joined her on stage and provided an extended guitar solo during Gaga/Calderone’s performance of “You and I.”

May also appears on the studio version of her pop/piano hit, making him the second prominent classic rocker to appear on Gaga’s latest album Born This Way. The late [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Clarence Clemons[/lastfm] contributes a sax solo on her song “The Edge of Glory.”
