Forty-five years this week, on on May 16th 1966, The Beach Boys released their seminal album Pet Sounds. Advancing their sound from previous releases, the album is still among the most iconic collections in rock and roll.

Today Last.fm Trends is looking into the scrobbles (listens) they’ve received, to see how tracks from the album are holding up after all these years.

Pet Sounds was the band’s 11th studio album in their first four years, putting most modern artists in the shade.

Counting three tracks out of their six-month top five, it’s an impressive amount of scrobbles for just one release from the prolific band.

The album’s top tag (marked as such by Last.fm users) is 60s. Other top releases with that tag include The BeatlesSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (604,701 listeners) and The Rolling StonesRolled Gold (599,153 listeners).

Pet Sounds‘ own 217,710 listeners reflects the struggle they had against the British invasion of the 1960s, but it’s still gained its place in history with second place in Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time – the first place going to the aforementioned Beatles release.
