Further along in the record, Saadiq tips his cap to [lastfm]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm], [lastfm]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm], [lastfm]Curtis Mayfield[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Ray Charles[/lastfm] — among others.

This album nails the classic Motown sound, but that’s not to say he’s stuck in the past. On “Day Dreams” Raphael marries a [lastfm]Bo Diddley[/lastfm] shuffle with the steel guitar of [lastfm]Robert Randolph[/lastfm], who he calls out by name.
