Happy 70th Birthday Bugs Bunny

wild hare Happy 70th Birthday Bugs Bunny

Today in 1940 Bugs Bunny made his debut in the Warner Brothers cartoon “A Wild Hare.”

He was patterned after a character played by Clark Gable. His creator’s inspiration came from the scene in “It Happened One Night” where Gable, is sitting on a stoop eating a carrot.

Warner Brothers considers July 27th to be “Bugs Bunny”‘s birthday, as it was on this date in 1940 that the “wascally wabbit” first uttered his immortal catch phrase, “What’s up, Doc?” It came in the cartoon “A Wild Hare.”   Listen to a  1970’s clip of Mel Blanc telling Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show how he developed the character’s voice.
